In late 2007, the Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS) began operation of the 9.6-mile LYNX Blue Line light rail line, which extends from Uptown Charlotte southward to near the I-485 expressway. The line runs more or less parallel to South Boulevard and the I-77 expressway.
Most observers credit the line’s success to expensive parking and excessive traffic in Uptown Charlotte. The area draws 71,000 workers each day. It also features several regional destinations, including Bank of America Stadium, Time Warner Cable Arena and the Charlotte Convention Center. The area also has over 100 bars and restaurants along with numerous theaters, museums and galleries. The light rail line allows commuters and visitors to park-and-ride in several of the convenient southern stations along South Boulevard.
The Cameron Wood neighborhood is located on 386 acres of land that, in earlier years, was a hunting preserve owned by the Belk family. The property, which includes a man-made pond, was at one time considered as a possible location for a major shopping mall. However, the plans were changed because it was thought to be too far from the center of Charlotte to be suitable. Eventually, in an exchange of properties, the Harris family became the owners of the property and the Belk family took over the land that would one day become the site of SouthPark mall.
A few more ownership changes occurred before UDC Homes took over the property and neighborhood covenants were filed on July 8, 1986. In 1996, the remaining homesites were sold by UDC to David Weekly Homes. David Weekly completed their work in Cameron Wood in 2000.
Charlotte is known for its fantastic weather, close proximity to the mountains and beaches, and offers Southern hospitality unlike anywhere else. The Beverly Woods neighborhood is a highly sought-after community that is located along Sharon Road, just south of Fairview Road. SouthPark Mall, the Harris YMCA, Phillips Place, and Morrocroft Village are just around the corner with abundant shops and world class restaurants.
Beverly Woods was developed and built by John Crosland in the 1960’s and 1970’s. The homes here are predominately traditional in style and include ranches, split levels, and 2 story homes.
Somerset is a master-planned neighborhood with great amenities and open spaces. The community is located only minutes from I-485 at the intersection of Rea Rd and Tom Short Rd in Waxhaw. Somerset is situated on 200 acres of rolling countryside adjacent to Charlotte Golf Links, Providence Country Club, and the Club at Longview.
This is a family oriented community with tennis courts, swimming pool, walking trails, playground and park to get the most of your enjoyment of the neighborhood. Somerset is convenient to Charlotte-Douglas Int’l Airport, uptown, shopping, restaurants and excellent schools.
MATTHEWS GROVE
Matthews Grove is a thriving South Charlotte neighborhood consisting of 225 single family homes located on McKee Road between Weddington and Pleasant Plains Roads. The homes in Matthews Grove range in size from just under 2000 square feet to just over 3000 square feet. Prices on currently available homes start in the $180s to over $220s.
There is a very active Home Owners Association which holds numerous events, like Landscape Day, Ice Cream Socials, and Community Garage Sale. They also take great pride in the landscaping and maintenance of the Matthews Grove front entrance, their individual homes, as well as, other common areas within the subdivision.
Shannamara is a large neighborhood of approximately 700 homes located off of the Lawyers Rd exit of I-485 in Matthews. The housing component of the development is part of the Divide Golf Club and is a beautiful, well maintained community. The neighborhood has been around for over ten years and is loaded with amenities and fun family activities.
The neighborhood lies just across the county line in Union County, but a small part of the neighborhood bordering I-485 lies within Mecklenburg County. The legal address for the neighborhood is Matthews.
Starmount is a very popular residential neighborhood in the South Charlotte (South Boulevard at Arrowood and Archdale) area. It is the largest established neighborhood in South Charlotte with nearly 1,400 homes. Starmount was constructed in the 1960s and the majority of the homes are a classical mix of ranch and contemporary styles intermingled to make a truly unique neighborhood.
Lots of mature trees, spacious lots and little through-traffic offer residents a quiet, safe and attractive community complete with a neighborhood pool and tennis courts. Park Road Park is nearby with a large lake, walking trails, and tennis courts. KNIGHTSBRIDGE
